Nvidia has announced in a recent press release plans to invest $5bn into Intel stock, representing about a 4% stake in the company.

The investment will see the joint development of products such as custom CPUs, which can be integrated into Nvidia's AI data centres, says Nvidia and Intel. Nvidia's AI technology will also be integrated into Intel's semiconductors for PCs.

Intel has previously struggled to maintain its place in the AI chipmaking market, but recent investments from the US Government and now Nvidia have caused Intel's stock market price to increase in the last few days.

"This historic collaboration tightly couples NVIDIA's AI and accelerated computing stack with Intel's CPUs and the vast x86 ecosystem — a fusion of two world-class platforms," says Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

The investment is likely to enable future collaboration between the two companies, particularly in the AI and chipmaking industry.
